Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is a seaside resort on the Côte de Beauté. The town boasts a remarkable heritage, with its Belle Époque villas, chalets and ‘folies’, as well as a wide variety of landscapes: coves, cliffs, the Coubre Forest and the Sentier des Douaniers coastal path. Today, it faces challenges such as coastal erosion, pressure on land, seasonality and an ageing population.
Atelier Soil is supporting the municipality as a consultant architect and urban planner. The remit operates on two scales. At the municipal level, the aim is to develop an overarching vision, consistent with the Local Urban Development Plan (PLU), the Regional Development Plan (SPR) and the Coastal Act. At the plot level, the aim is to provide guidance for each project as early as possible. During regular visits to the town hall, the agency works with elected representatives, municipal departments and the ABF to ensure that the seaside heritage is transformed without losing its character. It also ensures climate resilience, prudent land use and public spaces that are pleasant to enjoy in all seasons and for all members of the public.
